Trailer Treasures...Not Trash

We've begun a new life... in a trailer. What it lacks in glamor is made up for in sheer insanity.

In the middle of a hectic second semester Chris began to feel uneasy about our living situation and wanted to consider another option. What was it that brought on this uneasiness? It could have been the countless men roaming the street in front of our apartment toting rottweilers on chains in the middle of the day. Or it could have been the Slatterys down the road that shot off fireworks during the night (well after the 4th of July). Whatever it was, we may never know. Somewhere in the beginning of the uneasiness Chris started researching RV's and RV living. Shayna was sure this was a passing stage... Chris was hooked after reading just a few geriatric RV blogs. The romance and adventure they promised on the open road seemed like the life we needed.

Shayna got on board with the decision to move after she discovered that Chris had been sleeping with a .40 by the bedside. She thought that maybe what Chris meant by trailer was actually a new apartment in a safer part of town (one that wasn't on the wrong side of the tracks...literally, we used to live across 2 sets of railroad tracks). At some point she realized that this may be the only dream that Chris would ever have in his life... and she let him run with it. Shayna eventually thought it would be fun to live in a trailer, probably partially from the peer pressure of having had half of her siblings (Sunde, Kody, and Kasey and their families) begin their marriages in trailers... and they turned out great!

So during some of Chris' "free time" (mainly during 2 very boring classes that shall forever remain a secret) he looked on Craigslist, marketplace, and many other online listings, for our dream RV and truck. Ironically, at the end of our search, it was Shayna that found both the truck and the RV.

The truck was mislisted for the Nashville area (2 hrs from McKenzie), but was actually down in Mobile Alabama (7 hrs away). We thought that was the end of it, but the people had family up near Nashville and were willing to meet us there the next day. After a few test drives, Black Beauty was ours, it was definitely meant to be. We had to neuter the poor thing (his 3 inch Body Lift scared Chris when it came to towing... and we couldn't find anyone that was willing to do a custom 5th wheel installation).

Our RV is a diamond in the rough. An older couple in Kentucky had babied it for 9 years and felt that their RVing days were over. Alan, the previous owner,  thought Chris was a scammer at first because his cell number is from Utah, but soon he learned that we were quality RV wannabes. The correspondence over email was like having a pen pal while in middle school ( I think we totaled over 70 emails in the month before we picked up the RV). On the day when we brought our baby home, Chris drove 3 hours north to Kentucky, had breakfast with our new RV pals, and headed home... Papa Mike would have been proud. Chris took a wrong turn 5 miles down the road (y'all out west have no idea the maze of country roads we live by) and made a 16 point turn in a little clearing. No other mishaps occurred, and the long awaited Ruby (short for Starcraft Aruba... we thought the nickname made it sound like a granny with flair... basically what she is) was home at last... er... she is the home now... so I guess we we're home at last.

Chris' buddy Chris (from school) hooked us up with a place to park our home. He rents from the most amazing landlord EVER, the 100% southern grandpa, Jimmy. He is a member of the Church of God of Prophecy (and proud of it... we love him!).  We're parked up on his acreage a ways out of town. Call us crazy, but we love our new home on wheels.

our Boy is 1

I cant believe its been a year!

I was thinking back to when Trace was born and thought I'd give a few details:
Trace was 2 weeks late..ha ha that stands out in my mind! Mom and Dad came up to UT to be there when he, or she;) was born. On the 4th I was determined to have him because its always been one of my favorite holidays! I did the whole caster oil(awful), blue cohash, strip the membranes, balloon dilation thing(the worst), walking, showers and all..  needless to say that 4th was memorable, but not in a good way :) Finally 4 days later I had my 1st pain at 2:45am.. walked up and down the Nelsons long driveway over and over  to see Chris in the hay field, while Mom timed my contractions. 12 min, 7 min, 5 min, 10 min.. contractions all day but nothing consistent. At 6:30 that evening we had an appointment. They said go home, eat and try and sleep, haha that wasn't happinin'. We were living in Wallsburg, 30 minutes away. We had to jump back in the car right when we got home because my contractions were now 3 min apart. Mom was gettin' scared. I had read 2 midwife books on birthing and heard crazy stories from my sisters.. so I was prepared, but man was I nervous! Got to the Birthing Center at 8:45, the contractions were pretty bad but I thought, 'I can handle this'. Chris and Mom were doing most of the work anyway haha, they were rubbin' the heck out of my hip and back bones. I remember looking at the clock at about 11:45 and thinking, 'wow were did the time go, and why am I not done yet?' The contractions were now bad enough that I started thinking thoughts like; 'If there was a way to give up right now, I would!' And 'What was I thinking trying to do this natural?!' Anyway not good things to be thinkin', ya know. I knew I wasn't going to give up.  They asked if I wanted them to brake my water so the baby would come faster and boy was that the kicker! Whatever I was doing not to 'die' wasn't working so I got into the hot tub. At 1:15 they said I was ready to push and asked if I wanted to get out of the tub? I didn't want to have a water birth but I said; 'Im not movin'. I'd only pushed a little while, but for a second they couldn't find his lil heart beat so they really kicked me into gear! Trace McGregor Nelson was born at 1:45, THANK HEAVENS! He was 7.2 lbs, 22in. Good thing Mom and Chris were there thru the whole thing, I would have died without them. Im being honest. My Dad was out in the front room and when we brought the baby out he was wiping the tears away. These are the things Ill never forget.

Trace is now:
Walking!!
Can throw a ball AND catch!
1st word: WOW, wowow to everything
So good at cuddling me to sleep :)
Favorite Foods: Watermelon, refried beans and fishies(eats anything we give him)
Has 4 Teeth, couple more are comin!
Holds up his own bottle!
Laughs his hardest when: Daddy is holding him and I chase them

Some funny things:
At about 6 months-When Trace was in the bath he would always try and stand up, so we would say NO NO! Well days later he was reaching to unplug my computer and I said NO NO, and he sat right down haha!

I thought I was brilliant when Trace was in the stage of putting EVERYTHING in his mouth, to teach him to throw it instead.. it worked a little to well.. he then happily went through a stage where he would  throw everything and eat nothing :)

Gowin' to fast!

4th of July in AZ!!!

Our week in Arizona was one of the best! Trace and Scarlett shared a birthday party at Summers new gym! Neither of them really got what was going on but we all had a good time. Some things just make the farm what it is; getting dominated in pinochle, Marley's lack of clothing, squash and cheese, and sushi with summer. Some new experiences for me included; the worlds OLDEST rodeo (who would have thought... right here in Arizona, the 48th state?), getting my trash kicked in a P90X workout and then complaining about it the whole week, and getting put in my place (aka a kiddie pool) by a protective older brother (thanks Kasey... I deserved it). Shayna reverted back to her old self holding either a hoe or a camera about 99% of the time. By the end of the week neither Shayna or I were ready to come back to the volunteer state.

Happy 1st Fathers Day

Chris is such a good daddy..
I always joke that he cant multi task, but that is a great trait when it comes
to watching Trace! He makes Trace laugh harder then anyone can. He is always
sweet with him and sometimes to protective :)
He is an answer to a life long prayer.

Memorial Day

We spent our Memorial Day weekend with the Oldies and the Amish, and LOVED every minute!
Claud and Ella invited us to a BBQ and Karaoke! Everyone there must have been
at least 50 years older then us.. They talked about their broken tractors and the
need for rain- I felt right at home! We are grateful to these dear people who have
become like family out here.

LOOK AT THOSE LIL TEETHS!
